Production Manager – Tree & Plant Nursery

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Production Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of both our field nursery and containerised nursery. This pivotal role requires a hands-on leader with a deep understanding of nursery production, plant health, and team management. The ideal candidate will have the expertise to drive productivity, maintain high-quality standards, and ensure efficient processes across all nursery operations.

Key Responsibilities Leadership & Team Management

  • Provide strong, proactive leadership to production teams in both the field and containerised nurseries and stock control divisions.
  • Train, mentor, and motivate staff to meet production targets while maintaining high morale and engagement.
  • Schedule and manage workloads to optimise team efficiency during peak and off-peak seasons.
  • Lead by example in fostering a safe, inclusive, and professional work environment.

Production Oversight

  • Plan, implement, and oversee all growing schedules, from propagation to despatch or sale readiness.
  • Monitor and maintain the health, quality, and growth of plants, ensuring compliance with industry best practices and documenting for governing bodies.
  • Optimise irrigation, feeding, pest control, and disease management strategies to maximise plant quality.
  • Manage transitions between field and container nursery production where applicable, ensuring seamless operations.

Operational Management

  • Develop and execute daily, weekly, and seasonal production plans.
  • Ensure machinery, equipment, and infrastructure are maintained and in good working order.
  • Monitor inventory levels of plants, growing media, and supplies, coordinating with procurement as needed.
  • Enforce strict adherence to safety and compliance standards, including environmental regulations.

 Performance Monitoring & Reporting

  • Track production KPIs and identify areas for improvement.
  • Produce monthly and quarterly reports on production, labour, and inventory metrics for management review.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to increase efficiency and reduce costs without compromising quality.

The right person Essential

  • Proven experience in a leadership role within a tree and/or plant nursery or similar industry sector
  • Strong knowledge of plant health, pest/disease management, and growing best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop teams in a fast paced environment – Excellent organisational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • A hands-on, proactive approach with a passion for plants and production excellence.

 Desirable

  • Horticulture or Agriculture qualification
  • Experience with nursery production technologies and systems.
  • Familiarity with environmental compliance and sustainability practices in nursery operations.
