Limerick’s Kirby Engineering to create 300 jobs in expansion drive
The family-founded, privately-owned company said the new jobs will include engineering, commercial, operations and administrative staff, with recruitment for many of these roles already under way.
Kirby has also announced a €2m plan to upgrade its company headquarters in Co Limerick. The construction phase of this expansion is projected to take six months, with the facility expected to be operational by the end of 2021.

Could a four-day working week become a reality?
The benefits of the four-day week reported in international studies have included talent retention, higher employee satisfaction, lower sickness levels and higher productivity. 270 Irish candidates apply to join Europe’s space agency
There are 270 applications from Irish candidates among the more than 22,500 people who have applied to become the European Space Agency’s next astronauts.
During ESA’s last call for astronauts in 2008, the number of applicants who provided a medical certificate and finalised their online application form was 8,413.
Between four and six career astronauts will join the ESA workforce as permanent staff members, and there will be a reserve of up to 20 people who will not immediately be hired by the agency, but will remain with their current employers until a flight opportunity is identified for them.
In the latest recruitment round, 257 people applied for the newly-established parastronaut vacancy, including four candidates from Ireland.
Around 5,400 (24%) of all applicants identify as female – compared to a figure of 15.5% in 2008.

Making Appreciation Easy and Contagious
At the end of the day, building a culture of appreciation comes down mostly to a lot of small commonsense practices: Not taking your people for granted. Remembering to say thank-you in a personal and sincere way. Making it clear that you’re interested in your employees’ growth and in them as individuals.
Start by expressing more gratitude to those around you and see what happens. You might be surprised at what a big difference the little things can make.

Remote working a deal breaker for close to half of job candidates
Two surveys chime on demand for greater flexibility on where and when to work post-Covid.
Up to 44 per cent of job candidates say they would refuse a role if the employer did not offer some form of remote working, according to a survey by an executive search firm.
The findings are mirrored in a separate international report from EY which found that 54 per cent of employees would consider leaving their current job post-Covid, if they are not given some flexibility in where and when they work.
