Making Appreciation Easy and Contagious

The best part of appreciation is that it’s free and doesn’t consume a lot of time. Anyone at any level can offer appreciation. It can be directed toward an employee, a colleague, or a boss. But when leaders get involved in the effort, a culture of appreciation spreads more quickly.

At the end of the day, building a culture of appreciation comes down mostly to a lot of small commonsense practices: Not taking your people for granted. Remembering to say thank-you in a personal and sincere way. Making it clear that you’re interested in your employees’ growth and in them as individuals.

Start by expressing more gratitude to those around you and see what happens. You might be surprised at what a big difference the little things can make.

Great Leaders Are Confident, Connected, Committed, and Courageous

Great leaders demonstrate four elements to inspire action: They are confident in themselves, connected to others, committed to purpose, and emotionally courageous.
Most of us are great at only one of the four. Maybe two. But to be a powerful presence, you need to excel at all four simultaneously. If you’re confident in yourself but disconnected from others, everything will be about you and you’ll alienate the people around you. If you’re connected to others but lack confidence in yourself, you will betray your own needs and perspectives in order to please everyone else. If you’re not committed to a purpose, something bigger than yourself and others, you’ll flounder, losing the respect of those around you as you act aimlessly. And if you fail to act powerfully, decisively, and boldly — with emotional courage — your ideas will remain idle thoughts and your goals will remain unfulfilled fantasies.

Remote working a deal breaker for close to half of job candidates

Two surveys chime on demand for greater flexibility on where and when to work post-Covid.

Up to 44 per cent of job candidates say they would refuse a role if the employer did not offer some form of remote working, according to a survey by an executive search firm.

The findings are mirrored in a separate international report from EY which found that 54 per cent of employees would consider leaving their current job post-Covid, if they are not given some flexibility in where and when they work.

Permanent TSB to create 180 jobs as part of technology investment

Permanent TSB is to create 180 jobs as it invests in its digital infrastructure and business banking, to the next phase of the bank’s growth strategy.

PTSB also said it would introduce hybrid working arrangements for employees, including the use of a network of hubs to cut commute times for workers.

Recruitment for the roles, which will be in technology, business banking, risk management and data analytics, is already underway the bank said. The new jobs will be at senior and graduate level, and come following the announcement of a further €50 million investment in its technology infrastructure and digital capabilities.

This announcement comes just seven months after PTSB confirmed plans to cut 300 jobs, mainly targeting managerial positions, via a voluntary severance scheme.

International Coaching Week. The value of reciprocal coaching.

As its International Coaching Week and as a way of illustrating the value of coaching here is a short conversation between myself and Kieran Murphy where we talk about our Reciprocal Coaching arrangement- where two coaches coach each other.

We talk about the value of carving out personal space in a coaching environment for reflection and refocusing.  Over the last 16 months we met every 3-4 weeks to coach each other, providing that space to be listened to in a very supportive and encouraging way.

It has proven to be really valuable for me both professionally and personally, so thank you Kieran.
