Candidate Series | Part 3: Communication Matters — Even when the Conversation is Difficult
Recruitment works best when everyone communicates openly.
Candidates sometimes worry that telling a recruiter something might damage their chances of securing a role. In our experience, the opposite is usually true.
If you’re interviewing elsewhere — tell us.
If your salary expectations change — tell us.
If you’ve received another offer — tell us.
If you’re having doubts about the role — tell us.
If your notice period or availability changes — tell us.
And if you’ve decided the opportunity simply isn’t right for you — tell us that too.
Changing your mind is allowed. Circumstances change. Priorities change. Another opportunity may be better suited to you. What creates difficulties is when communication stops.
Remember that your recruitment partner is representing you to an employer. We are having conversations on your behalf, managing expectations and advocating for your candidacy. The more transparent you are with us, the better we can represent you.
The same applies when communicating directly with hiring managers. Be clear about what you want, what you can commit to and anything that could affect your decision.
And once you’ve accepted an offer, keep communicating. The period between offer, resignation and start date is an important part of the recruitment process too.
Professionalism isn’t just how you perform in an interview. It’s how you communicate throughout the entire journey.
Be open. Be responsive. Be honest.
It protects your reputation, strengthens relationships and gives everyone the best chance of achieving the right outcome.
