About the Role

Our Client IMR (Irish Manufacturing Research) are seeking a Research and Development Design Engineer to play a leading role in building and developing the organisation’s capability and research capacity to meet the growing needs of the centre and its industrial research partners in the area of Advanced Manufacturing. The latter includes technologies such as Additive Manufacturing/3D printing, Advanced Machining, Post Processing, and novel Component Design and Simulation.

The successful candidate will work closely with the existing Design for Manufacturing team and support the design, testing and piloting of prototype solutions across a wide range of industrial sectors including medical device, aerospace, injection moulding and precision engineering. They will focus on developing innovative solutions to R&D challenges within these industries and utilise a range of manufacturing technologies including both metal and polymer Additive Manufacturing and CNC machining.

The successful candidate should have demonstrated experience in applying mechanical design techniques to solve and address manufacturing and industrial problems. The ideal candidate should also have experience in designing for 3D printing.

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated self-starter, requiring little direction, able to thrive in an environment that requires a high degree of personal accountability. They should be highly customer-orientated, adaptable and efficient, and not afraid to take a hands-on approach.

The objective of this role is to provide design support for the Design for Manufacturing team as part of the development and application of a new and novel manufacturing solutions across multiple projects.

Specific responsibilities:

  • Owner of design deliverables within assigned projects.
  • Supports development of design specification.
  • Generates CAD, drawings, and elements of technical file.
  • Support development of test methods for the evaluation of new products.
  • Complete design analysis and review of existing and newly developed products.
  • Supports design related aspects of quality management (develop/champion/follow best practice for PLM).
  • Provides input to project reports and supports stakeholder involvement.
  • Prepare and present technical project updates and output for dissemination.
  • Work closely with other team members to ensure overall project goals are met.
  • Take on additional engineering and commercial work where required to ensure overall project goals are met.
  • Promote and support safe work practices across the IMR lab environment.

Desired Skills and Experience

Essential:

  • Experience in delivering technical projects in an industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Strong knowledge of design and modelling surface-based modelling software (Siemens NX and Materialise Magics preferred).
  • Strong skill-set for application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Principles to incoming drawings and internally generated designs.
  • Experience in developing manufacturing drawings and working with sub-contract suppliers.
  • General understanding of additive manufacturing techniques.
  • Background in design for injection moulding – able to work with tooling components and assemblies.
  • Experience in translating customer needs into specific product requirements.
  • Experience in design analysis including Root Cause Analysis and FMEA.
  • Good understanding of the material science of polymers and metals.
  • BSc/BEng. in relevant engineering or scientific discipline.
  • Valid EU work permit.

Desirable:

  • MSc in relevant engineering or scientific discipline.
  • Practical understanding of the importance of DFAM for LBPBF.
  • Previous experience in data prep for FEA simulation
  • Experience in ‘Design of Experiments’ and associated statistical methodology as the basis for process characterisation.
  • Experience in manual machining and fabrication.

Salary & Benefits

This position will command a package consisting of basic salary (depending on experience), employer pension contribution and 5 weeks holidays.
